What sort of trains operate services on the line?

Northern Rail operate diesel unit trains (either 158s or 156s) on the Settle-Carlisle Line, all travelling between Leeds and Carlisle. In addition, on summer Sundays, Northern Rail also operate Dales Rail services from Blackpool and Preston to Carlisle via the Settle-Carlisle line.  See our trains page for more details of the trains, and see our timetables and fares page for times and fares.

What about steam trains?

Steam and diesel charter services occasionally operate over the line, although they do not normally stop at local stations. The majority of charter trains start and end their journey in other parts of the country.

What about fares on the line - how much does it cost and are there rover and ranger tickets available?

For more details on fares, see our Timetables and Fares page.

Is there a local user railcard scheme?

Dales Railcards cost just £10 and can be purchased by residents in the postcode areas adjacent to the line. The card entitles holders to a one third discount on fares and permits up to four accompanying children to travel at discounted child fares. Further details of the Dales Railcard scheme are available by clicking on this link.

Are Senior, Family, Disabled and Young Persons Railcard discounts available?

Yes, all national railcards are valid for travel on the line.  Certain rover tickets do not permit discounts - see our Timetables and Fares page.

Can dogs travel on the trains?

Yes, there is no charge and each person can take a maximum of two dogs.

Can I take my bicycle on the train?

Normally, two bicycles can be carried (any more is subject to the discretion of the conductor). For more information, see the Cycling by Train guide available from staffed stations or click here to download the Cycling by Train guide, provided by the National Rail website and sponsored by Brompton Cycles.

What facilities apply to groups travelling on the line?

Our group travel office will be pleased to help you in arranging travel for groups of ten or more people on the line. Learn more by going to the group travel page.

Are facilities available for wheelchairs and powered scooters?

Wheelchairs and powered wheelchairs can be carried on trains operated by Northern Rail on the line. All trains have space for at least one wheelchair.

Unfortunately, powered scooters cannot be carried on the trains. These scooters have a much larger turning circle and there is insufficient space at the train access and egress points for them.
