Are there ten or more of you wanting to travel on the Carlisle-Settle-Leeds railway? There are lots of reasons why a group may wish to travel on the line - to enjoy the scenery, for a days shopping in Leeds or Carlisle, an overnight stay in Leeds to go to the clubs or a day in Skipton to visit the castle or to take a trip on the canal. Suggested days out on the line and sources of further information are included on the Days Out page.

Discounts are available for groups of ten or more fare paying passengers travelling on many of the trains.Children less than five years old travel free and child fare are half of the adult fare. Discounts apply to single, day return and saver return tickets and the rates depend upon the date of travel, anticipated train occupancy and the journey to be taken.Groups can be booked to/from any of the stations on the line.

School parties can benefit from year round educational group rates.

To take advantage of the discounts, contact the Group Travel Office to make the advance booking. You can complete the online booking form, or print a copy and send it by post or fax. We make every effort to deal with your call as soon as practicable.

It is not possible to provide a comprehensive list of the group travel fares between every station but you can send an enquiry to the group travel office at appleby.station@northernrail.org. Please quote the preferred date and time of travel, start/end station and whether you would like information about a single, day return or period return fare.

On-Train Guides

The Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line provide volunteer on-train guides between Settle and Carlisle, to accompany groups travelling on the line and on some other trains as well.Our guides can provide a running commentary if desired or simply highlight points of interest along the line and answer passengers’ questions.Guides are well-versed in all aspects of the line: its history, its architecture, railway facts and figures, the towns and villages it passes through and tourist information generally.The landscape, arguably the most scenic on any railway line in England, comes in for a special mention.

We have two very popular publications for sale on the trains: a fold-out illustrated map of the Settle-Carlisle line with brief facts and figures, and a very comprehensive new souvenir booklet.

Most weeks from Tuesday to Friday there will be a guide on thetrains from Settle to Carlisle, departing Settle at 0950, 1044 and 1146.Most weekdays there will be a guide on the 0853 from Carlisle and sometimes on the 1151 and 1400 services.

On Saturdays we aim to provide a guide for any groups that are booked, most often on the 0950, 1044 and 1146 from Settle.
