The Settle-Carlisle experience can be part of a short-break or day trip and the reasons to travel with us are many – sightseeing from the train; walking in the Dales or Eden Valley; shopping or a night-out in Leeds, Skipton or Carlisle or a birthday or anniversary treat.
Our office is based at Appleby and with our extensive local knowledge, we are able to provide you with a wealth of information to assist you arrange your group event.
The award-winning refreshment trolley service offers a wide range of hot and cold drinks, locally produced beer and lager, tray bakes and biscuits, confectionery and, on some services, locally-made ice cream. You can pre-book refreshments for your group and our team will be happy to discuss options with you. The Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line can provide an on-train guide to either provide a running commentary or, point out places of interest and answer your questions. The guides have a wealth of knowledge about the line, its history and architecture, the stunning scenery as well as the local towns and villages. All the guides are volunteers and whilst the availability of a guide cannot be guaranteed, you can contact the on-train guide coordinator to request the services of a guide for your group.
Your journey can start and end at any of the stations between Carlisle and Leeds (or further afield) and the cost will depend on the journey taken and the date of travel. Discounted rates are available to groups of ten or more fare-paying passengers. Some of the 2017 fares are available here. For other fares please email or phone us.
The diesel sprinter trains operate daily (except Christmas Day & Boxing Day) and we limit group booking to a maximum of fifty passengers on any of the services.

The group had an excellent journey to Carlisle. The weather was sunny and the rail trip was very smooth. The benefit of a guide was very well appreciated by our members, he was informative and gave great value to the journey. The lady who served the refreshments was also very friendly and helpful. We cannot speak highly enough of the service we enjoyed.
Our day was just about perfect. I had requested an on-train guide and Jack was on board to see us on at Ribblehead and stayed for the whole journey. Seats did have reserved notices…..
The weather was unexpectedly glorious and there was even a steam special standing in Carlisle for 30 minutes as we waited for our train. Needless to say this attracted much attention.
Thank you again for all your help. We left no stone unturned and things could not have turned out better.

We want to thank you for an enjoyable trip on Saturday/Sunday this last weekend. The weather on the way up was beautiful, hence the views were magnificent, a very different landscape with the snow the following day! The volunteer guide (my apologies to him, I can’t remember his name) and his small grandson Ben were extremely informative, we all found his wealth of knowledge very interesting, even some people sat around us, who were local, said they’d learnt a lot. I hope we didn’t traumatise the friendly refreshment lady too much, although she seemed to be enjoying our laughs with us.
