Is there a local user railcard scheme?

Dales Railcards cost just £12 and can be purchased by residents in the postcode areas adjacent to the line. The card entitles holders to a one third discount on fares and permits up to four accompanying children to travel at discounted child fares. Are Senior, Family & Friends, Disabled, Forces and 16-25 Railcard discounts available?

Yes, all national railcards are valid for travel on the line. Certain rover tickets do not permit discounts – see our Timetables & Fares page.
Can I use a Britail pass?

Yes, travellers to Britain can use their Britrail pass to travel on the line – see www.britrail.com
What facilities apply to groups travelling on the line?

Our group travel office will be pleased to help you in arranging travel for groups of ten or more people on the line. Discounts are available for groups. Fares are dependent on the journey being taken and the date of travel. Learn more by going to the group travel page on the SCRDC website. The Friends of the Settle-Line provide volunteer On-Train Guides who can provide a commentary during the journey or answer questions. For details visit our on-train guides page.
Are facilities available for wheelchairs and powered scooters?

Wheelchairs and powered wheelchairs can be carried on trains operated by Northern Rail on the line. All trains have space for at least one wheelchair.

For safety reasons Northern Rail can’t take any mobility scooters on the trains unless they can be folded down before boarding and carried on like luggage.

Can assistance be provided at stations?

Yes, assistance can be provided at stations along the line. Please call Northern Rail’s Customer Relations Department on 08081 56 16 06 (freephone) or email assistance@northernrail.org for advice and to book assistance. The service is free of charge but 24 hours notice is requested to confirm the arrangements with station staff
Can dogs travel on the trains?

Yes, there is no charge and each person can take a maximum of two dogs.
Can I take my bicycle on the train?

Normally, two bicycles can be carried (any more is subject to the discretion of the conductor). For more information, see the Cycling by Train guide available from staffed stations or visit the National Rail website.

Engineering work may affect train services from time to time. Non-folding bicycles are not allowed on rail replacement bus services at any time. Folding bicycles are accepted if fully folded.

What sort of trains operate services on the line?

Northern Rail operate diesel unit trains (either 158s or 156s) on the Settle-Carlisle Line, all travelling between Leeds and Carlisle. In addition, on summer Sundays, Northern Rail also operate Dales Rail services from Blackpool and Preston to Carlisle via the Settle-Carlisle line. What about steam trains?

Steam and diesel charter services occasionally operate over the line, although they do not normally stop at local stations. The majority of charter trains start and end their journey in other parts of the country. To obtain information about planned steam excursions visit www.uksteam.info
