There are occasions when engineering work may disrupt train services and any known disruption is advised below. These details are subject to change but we endeavour to keep them as accurate as possible.
A major landslip at Eden Brows, Armathwaite (just south of Carlisle) occurred following the storms of winter 2015/16. It has been estimated that 500,000 tonnes of earth have slipped down the embankment towards the River Eden. Repairs are likely to take several months and the railway line is currently closed between Armathwaite and Carlisle. Trains are running between Leeds and Armathwaite (and vice versa) with coaches operating Armathwaite and Appleby to/from Carlisle (and intermediate stations) As well as tackling the repairs to the area affected by the landslip, Network Rail have been busy doing improvements to the line whilst the section has been closed. The section between Armathwaite and Carlisle is due to re-open in Spring 2017.
Whilst strictly not on the Settle-Carlisle route, some of you are interested in travel on the Bentham line. Engineering work between 26 and 30 September (inclusive) will prevent trains operating between Hellifield and Carnforth/Lancaster/Morecambe. Rail replacement coaches will operate.
On Saturday and Sunday, 22 and 23 October, engineering work will mean that trains will operate Leeds to/from Ribblehead only. Rail replacement coaches will operate Ribblehead to/from Carlisle.
On Monday and Tuesday, 24 and 25 October, trains will only operate Leeds to/from Appleby. Rail replacement coaches will operate to/from Appleby.
It is recommended that you check your journey prior to travel at Northern’s website.
