How to find cheap rail tickets

If you’re planning a journey by train, it’s worth spending a little time to make sure you’ve found yourself the cheapest tickets.  Without a huge amount of effort, you may well come up with a great little cheeky deal!

Firstly, if it’s possible, buy the tickets early.  Of course, if it’s a last minute trip then this doesn’t really help.  However, if you know well in advance that you’re going to be travelling then you could bag yourself a great advance fare that really will save you some money.  The train companies release tickets 12 weeks prior to the travel date.  Make a date in your diary to start looking then.  Once you’ve searched for your ideal date and time, don’t just assume that’s the best you can do.  If you can be a little bit flexible and alter the details of the search slightly, you could be surprised what deals pop up!  A top tip is to avoid early mornings and the end of the afternoon.  If you can travel outside these peak hours, there will be cheaper tickets available to you.

Some destinations and routes are served by a number of different train operating companies.  They will probably offer different ticket prices.  It’s worth doing a bit of research to compare what’s on offer out there from various operators.

Do you have a railcard?  The chances are, you will be eligible for one of the national railcards.  These give you a third off your fare.  This is a saving not to be sniffed at!  Railcards aren’t just available to young people or senior travellers.  If you travel regularly as a family or with one other person, you can have a railcard too.  If you’re making a long journey, a railcard can sometimes pay for itself just in one trip!  Have a look here at the range of national railcards here.  Of course, if you live in one of the eligible postcodes and you use the Settle-Carlisle or Leeds-Morecambe lines then our Dales Railcard is a great way to save on your travel costs.

Does all that sound like a bit too much effort?  To make it easy for you to find the best possible deals we’ve teamed up with TrainGenius.com.  The TrainGenius search engine will always display the cheapest tickets available for your search criteria.  It’s really easy to change the dates and times of your search to find an even better value ticket.  You can check which train companies you will be travelling with by selecting the info button next to any service.  If more than one train company operates on your selected journey, you can choose the service which suits you best.  Once you’ve found the best deal, you can book the tickets online.  You can make a further saving by using your railcard (including the Dales Railcard for eligible journeys).  When your booking is complete, the TrainGenius.com customer service team is committed to providing all the aftercare which you may require.

Bookmark this page now and next time you’re planning a trip, you can come back and try out the TrainGenius search engine.   A percentage of ticket sales made through this website will go towards the Settle Carlisle line.
